How To Choose a Veterinarian For My Pet

Try to reach the vets dispensary at least 10- 15 minutes earlier than the appointment time so that you have enough time to fill in all the forms that will need to be completed before the vet takes a look at your dog. While you are doing this, don’t forget to cast a glance around and see if you find this place better than the other dispensaries that you’ve been to.

Make sure that the dispensary is quite big and spacious so that you and your dog can sit there comfortably. See that the walls and the floor are clean and there is not noticeable bad odor. Try to communicate with the receptionist and see if he/she is well behaved and polite.

If the Vet sells dog supplies, that is also a plus as well, because you will be able to conveniently purchase them.

The environment in the dispensary has to be good and calm with everything going on very smoothly without any chaos. Though on certain days there may be more patients due to which the schedule is likely to be hectic and you can see the staff members bustling around but yet maintaining their calm in an organized and friendly manner.

Just try to figure out how much time it takes for your turn to come to see the vet when you have taken his appointment. Normally it should take 5-20 minutes but if you have to wait for more than an hour or 45 minutes then you should go and ask the receptionist if this is the situation every time despite taking an appointment. Talk to the receptionist very politely and see if she reciprocates in kind. Make a note of everything that you have observed. This can help you decide which vet you should choose for your dog.

You may need to pick up some discount dog crate or some cheap pet carrier to place your dog in before taking to the vet.

Observe very carefully the vets behavior and reaction to your questions when it’s your turn to get your dog examined by him.

1. To begin with see if your vet takes the trouble of introducing himself to you and your pet, or is he trying to rush up the examination and get done with the appointment.

2. You should also try and observe the vets reaction to your questions. It is very important that the vet should answer all your questions calmly. If you notice even a hint of irritation or annoyance you may want to take your business elsewhere.

3. The vet should also be open to giving out information about his practice.

4. You can be sure that a bored and uninterested vet will not be able to do justice to your dog. So try to observe if the vet seems passionate about his work.

5. How she behaves with your dog should be the most important constraint of all. After all if she is doesn’t genuinely love dogs she will never be able to maintain a humane approach towards her treatment.

6. Since your dog is the patient here, his comfort should be paramount. So make sure that he is comfortable with the vet.
