Should Online marketers Use Pseudonyms?
While individuals who work within the field of Internet Marketing really like how much freedom and variety it offers it is still a fact that most of the people who do not work here are more likely to look at it with intensely critical eyes. There are many rumors and misconceptions out there about IM and even the whole internet. The people who work within it realize just how legitimate and fulfilling it will be and, all the while, it poses an important problem: do you want to be judged for this world in your “offline” life?
A lot of the people who earn money in Internet Marketing use pseudonyms. They pick out fake names for themselves because they wish to keep their IM life separated from anything else they doespecially if they are only working in IM part time. Many new and part time IMers fear of being found out by bosses and friends. Obviously, even when you do not worry about this sort of thing it is still important: should you choose a pseudonym for the work you do online?
There really are a lot of benefits to using a pseudonym. The most important benefit, by a long shot, is having the opportunity to build an identity for yourself that is completely separate from your personal life and makes it easier to make sure they stay totally separate. People who operate in mainly strict or demanding fields or who are surrounded by those who view the Internet as a sketchy place benefit from using a pseudonym because it protects them from judgment.
Another reason many IMers choose to use a pseudonym is it helps them if they want to develop several products in several different fields. This is the way they can build expert identities in different niches while building credible businesses without their having to worry about seeming like a dabbler. You wont have to concern yourself with a person saying but dont you also sell to a conflicting market? because youll be doing so under an alternative name.
Sadly, however, among the larger reasons that individuals do IM business under a pseudonym is that they are trying to evade the responsibilities that come with running a business, like paying taxes. If none of the business is conducted under their legitimate name, then they believe that they shouldnt have to worry about the money they make being reported to the IRS. Do not fall for this kind of logic. Even when you generate income under a identify that is not your own it is still viewed as income and you will be held responsible for it. Further, the IRS will find youpeople who try to cheat the system always get found out.
It’s completely your choice whether or not you use a pseudonym for your online activities. For some people it is basically less complicated to have one name for their daily offline life and another for their online ventures. Others, then again, assume that using just one single name makes life much easier because there are fewer things to remember.
